Elevating Sound at Berlin’s Uber Arena with L-Acoustics L2 Professional Sound System
Berlin’s Uber Arena, a 17,000-seat multipurpose venue, has long been home to iconic sports teams such as the Eisbären Berlin ice hockey team and Alba Berlin basketball club. It also regularly hosts world-class concerts and high-profile events, including performances from Metallica, Coldplay, and U2. However, after years of use, the arena’s sound system, installed in 2008, struggled to meet the demands of modern events. Seeking a solution that could deliver exceptional audio for both sports fans and concertgoers, Uber Arena embarked on a search for the perfect concert sound system.
The Challenge
With up to 180 events each year, Uber Arena required a sound system capable of adapting to over 30 different configurations, each with unique acoustic challenges. The system needed to deliver crystal-clear audio for sporting events, concerts, and other entertainment, while also managing the venue’s complex acoustics. The solution would need to handle consistent high sound pressure levels across all seats and reduce unwanted reverberation, particularly in the low frequencies, without obstructing sightlines or interfering with the venue’s intricate roof structure.
The Solution
After a rigorous testing process of systems from four manufacturers, the L-Acoustics L2 professional sound system emerged as the clear winner. Its advanced cardioid pattern control was instrumental in reducing low-frequency reverberation, making it ideal for the arena’s acoustics. The installation included five hangs of L2 speakers, two facing south and one each facing north, east, and west, supplemented by eight X8 delay fills in the VIP restaurant and six X12 speakers under the central video cube. Powered by L-Acoustics amplified controllers and managed via sophisticated processors, the system ensures impeccable audio coverage throughout the venue.
Felix Maiworm, Project Engineer at MMT Network, noted, “The L2 system provided the perfect combination of power and control. Its ability to manage lower frequencies and maintain 99dB SPL across all seats was crucial in overcoming the arena’s unique challenges.”
The Result
The L-Acoustics L2 system has transformed the fan experience at Uber Arena. Whether hosting a sold-out concert or a championship game, the venue now boasts crystal-clear sound and consistent coverage throughout every seat. The system’s flexibility means it can easily adjust between sports and concert setups without labor-intensive mechanical changes, saving time and resources. Additionally, its compact design avoids interference with sightlines, ensuring the arena maintains its visual appeal.
Sebastian Rossman, Director of Venue Operations at AEG, praised the collaboration: “The success of this project is a testament to the seamless cooperation between L-Acoustics, PAM Events, MMT Network, and our team at Uber Arena. Everyone was committed to achieving the best possible outcome for our fans and performers.”
